Anathema

United Kingdom - Active.

Description

Death/Doom

Started playing heavy death/doom with grunts and was one of the three great death/doom bands from the Peaceville label in the early 90s. They were often mentioned alongside Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride. Early Anathema was characterized by the unique vocals of Darren White. After he left, they slowly evolved towards a complex, psychedelic sound with clean vocals. A lot of people now compare them to the legendary rock band Pink Floyd. They are currently known mainly for creating emotional rock music.

Misc

Stopped producing Doom-metal after 'The Silent Enigma' - Vocalist Darren White left after 'Pentecost III' and formed The Blood Divine. After that he joined Dead Men Dream, which he left to create his own band: Serotonal. The vocals were taken over by Vincent Cavanagh. Bassist and important songwriter Duncan Patterson left after 'Alternative 4' and formed a band called Antimatter (later joined by Daniel Cavanagh) - Most older albums have been re-released by Peaceville. - Violinist/Keyboard player Martin from My Dying Bride has done some session work for Anathema after he departed from My Dying Bride. - Danny Cavanagh also plays in LID a band that also features Eric Wagner of Trouble fame.
