Very well-written review! I'm definitely going to have to get me a copy. Love me some symphonic Norwegian doom, especially when it has Frode and Kjetil in the line-up. :D

"Letter to Vettori" on Bandcamp is very good indeed... on my "to buy" list, despite Forsmo... :D

Thanks, much appreciated!

Definitely one of the most enjoyable albums I've heard this year: really can't fault the sense of atmosphere about it.

That's a big "because of Forsmo" in my book... :D

very engaging introduction to this album about which I had no expectations. Would you upload it for me?

I had the chance to listen to it... not bad, but - to me - it's another Funeral album... or maybe a cross between Omit and Funeral... which is understandable or maybe it's Forsmo's vocals... :D

I didn't like it! :D I think the latest of Funeral (which I reviewed) was better. It's far too mellow and almost "sententious" I'd say, for me anyways!

The review really makes you want to listen to it, but since I can't stand Forsmo, I doubt I'll be able to look past that and enjoy it nonetheless... :/

I enjoyed this album as well, I'm definitely going to buy a copy. I was pleasantly surprised by the more upbeat sections in the album. I have had very mixed feelings of Frode's singing. I think the issue people tend to have with it is that it's overly layered. I assume that they're going for sort of a choir effect, but I think his voice truly shines when singing one melody by itself. When his voice isn't so layered with harmonies, I actually find his voice to be very beautiful.

I think he's very limited and his tone conveys a feeling of fake solemnity. It gets on my nerves! :D

I totally agree with bapho here. I listened to the album today on my MP3 player, btw, and found it very, very boring - perhaps even more so than "From These Wounds". Musical aspects aside, the production is strange, too: it seems somewhat similar to that of "In Fields..." in that is has a raw, slightly old-school feel to it, but this doesn't really combine well with the mellow style of the album. The mix, to me, fails to bring music and vocals together properly; they always seem like two disparate elements which never really merge into a whole. What's more, the vocals seem to dominant in the mix. I don't actually mind the layering, which is something that could work quite well in conveying a quasi-liturgical atmosphere, but for one thing Forsmo's singing is very limited (as bapho said) and lacking in nuances, and for another, it sounds totally slow-poke-like to me, as though he couldn't decide whether to cry himself to sleep or leave the crying part out altogether. His constant listless moaning annoys the living hell outta me!

yeah, listless is the right term; a polite way to say booooring!

Not boring... I think "inoffensive" is the word you are looking for... and I agree with that (well, yes, I'm agreeing with my own opinion)... :D

Inoffensive does make sense, too - he surely doesn't take any risks. His singing is very self-restrained and he thereby achieves a homogeneous atmosphere throughout the album, I'll give him that, but it simply fails to grab me at any point. But I guess it comes down to simply not liking the sound of the voice itself, which I do find somewhat offensive. :;):

Is this digital only or are there going to be physical copies up for grabs?

There's a limited digipack in production, currently scheduled for release late autumn/early winter.

As it turns out, it wasn't a digipak release in the end: but the limited CD version is now available.

Orders and links can be found on the Secret Quarters Records webstore: http://www.secretquarters.com/shop.php.
