Post The Brief History of Solitude

NB: This includes excerpts from the official label history taken from
Solitude Productions
"The Solitude Productions label was founded in July 2005 for promotion of mainly Russian doom metal varying within a wide range from traditional to funeral doom. The reason for label foundation lies behind the fact that many underground bands within doom metal frames create excellent music, but experience problems with finding the label, because no so many labels are interested in the style. Besides that, a significant part of material issued under doom metal trade mark actually is not (offering variations of gothic metal and melodic death metal), and the label (together with website supported by the same team) aims for providing correct information about the style as it is."
Founders Evgeny Semenov and Sergey Terentjev started the label in Moscow, with the SP.001 1000-copy re-release of Океан Печали - Таинство Зимы (Ocean Of Sorrow - Mysteries Of Winter). For various reasons, it relocated to the nearby city of Orel in 2008. Ocean Of Sorrow went on to become Revelations Of Rain, and are still releasing through the label.
"Among the achievements of the label within the period passed since the foundation one can outline that Solitude Productions signed for the first time in Russia a Russian funeral doom band, (Intaglio), and a sludge doom band (Heavy Lord). The label promoted not only new Russian bands, but also young talented bands from former Soviet republics: Belarus (Reido), Ukraine (Somnolent, Autumnia) and Latvia (Frailty). Solitude Productions is also known for re-releases of classical albums which played an important role in formation of Russian doom metal scene (Ocean of Sorrow, Painful Memories). This series of re-releases was also extended to several classical funeral doom releases by Evoken, Funeral which original releases were sold out and became a rare stuff."
As well as remaining true to the Russian scene, Solitude has continued to expand its roster as far afield as Brazil (Abske Fides) and Australia (Orphans Of Dusk), and more locally taken in bands from, amongst others, the Czech Republic (Et Moriemur), Finland (Astral Sleep) and Germany (Ophis). At its fifth birthday, the catalogue number had reached SP.036, with Russian band The Sullen Route. Five years on from that, it's at SP.105 (Sweden's Sorrowful) and still climbing, and the label has acquired a social and publicity officer, in the shape of Anton Granko, to help manage the day-to-day workload.

BadMoodMan Music
"In the end of 2006 the BadMoodMan Music sub-label was found for promotion of the bands which do not exactly fit the style of the mother label. After this division the label was actively asked about the difference between the mother label and the sub-label which in fact both promoted similar music featured doom elements. Finally the bands playing doom metal, doom-death, funeral doom or sludge doom were associated with mother label Solitude Productions, while the bands playing in other styles (for example, melodic death), featuring, however, doom metal elements were associated with BadMoodMan Music."
"However, the activity of BadMoodMan Music was not limited by the promotion of doom metal related bands, expanding to the area of ambient, dark folk and depressive black metal styles. For example, the original releases of famous Austrian dark ambient one-man-band Vinterriket were issued as well as Russian band Opaque Lucidity. Another band hosted by BadMoodMan Music is Kauan offering fine mixture of dark folk and doom metal which has been nominated as band of the year by several magazines. Recently the sub-label concentrated on depressive black metal bands such as Skogyr (2007), Darktrance and Raventale (2008)."
BadMoodMan has continued to expand along the same lines as the parent label, taking on acts that are seen to fit under the 'doomy' banner, or have moved into that category but remained with the Solitude family (for example, Narrow House). BMM.001 was a 100-copy pro-CDr release in DVD case format (Letargy Dream - Fragments Of Memory), five years on saw BMM.033 as a lavish double-CD remaster of Mournful Gust's She's My Grief debut plus bonuses and extras. Once again, the catalogue has spread worldwide, from Spain (Helevorn) to Chile (Poema Arcanvs), and a healthy spread of Russian and Ukrainian bands. The latest release of Shallow Rivers' The Leaden Ghost comes as number BMM.072.

Art Of Silence
The Art Of Silence sub-label ran from 2009 to 2011, releasing a series of 10 specially-packaged "LP-sleeve" albums. It covered very limited runs of 100 copies, exclusively for bands which were considered interesting but not a part of the main label standards. AOS also took over from the original non-standard packaging, such as use of DVD cases, which had been an early part of the BMM concept. The main thrust of the label was in the underground dark ambient scene, with such bands as the Armenian solo project Sadael and Ukrainians Dispersive Light.

Slow Burn Records
As post-type genres became more popular, the Slow Burn Records part of the label was started in 2010 to handle those, initially releasing the gold-plated and gold-embossed Fading Waves/Starchitect split. Post-metal, post-rock and post-hardcore have all been represented by such acts as the Belgian Grown Below, Belarussians Reido and Estonian band Talbot. The roster reached as far as BURN.020 in 2014, and although most effort has been focussed on the main Solitude label since then, it is still considered as an interesting part of the label family.

"Nowadays Solitude Productions and BadMoodMan Music appear to be an important part of Russian underground scene offering new talented bands to the fans of gloom and dark atmosphere in music."
That last comment was written some years ago. Clearly, with a total roster of over 200 releases, and a typical pressing run these days being 2 - 3000 copies, it seems like quite a modest understatement here in 2015. It is difficult to overestimate the importance that Solitude Productions has had in putting the underground scene of former Soviet Union countries on the map, given the surge of Doom metal that has come from Russia and the Ukraine - especially those, but including the whole Slavic bloc and far western Europe - over the past decade or so. There are other labels who may spring to mind - Endless Winter, Satanath, MFL, Endless Desperation - in connection with that same scene. Worthy though they all are, only Satanarsa Records' sporadic early releases of Flegethon albums pre-date the arrival of Solitude as a force for making that Doom scene available worldwide.

We at have nothing but respect for the achievement in starting such an enterprise from nothing and bringing it up to the point where there is even such a thing as the 'Solitude sound' being considered. Perhaps there is some common ground between many of the bands which are selected, but, nonetheless, the real hallmarks of Solitude should be considered the dedication with which they work towards releasing them. Unlike many of the better-known 'big' labels, they still talk to the press directly, without PR intermediaries, keep us in the loop for everything that is in the pipeline and send us real, physical copies of everything they produce. Just as much work goes into maintaining information for the public, on the Solitude website, and in making their releases readily available and reasonably priced to all, whether in physical or digital format, through the webstore and Bandcamp.
