I've used one of those on my recent recordings with both Unsilence and The Human Condition in conjunction with other pedals.

Post Re: Question

I have a question myself, when did ‘shoegazey’, ‘shoegaze’ come to prominence as a descriptor for doom metal and I think maybe its even classed as a genre by some. Use of it makes me vaguely nauseous.

Post Re: Question

I've used this term recently! :p I use it scarcely but It's quite suitable when I want to express the idea of the kind of blurred, meandering soundscapes this "style" is known for: introspective, droney wanking of a guy lost in himself gazing his shoes.
It's an ancient tag, like 20 years ago? I couldn't name a band that specifically would have been described that way though - I'm tempted to see the more generic and well-known 'post rock' to be the ultimate avatar of this style of music... Shoegaze to me would be post rock without the excitation, and the melodic swellings and the intensity; it's more restrained all along.

Post Re: Question

Interesting - I had no idea about any credible use of the term. Just didn’t like the sound of the name. Intend to work my way through some Jesu, being an appreciator of Godflesh over certain releases. It’s good new terms pop up - encapsulates artists doing something a bit different, rather than being stagnant in a genre most had nothing to do with establishing.

I thought shoegaze might have been synonymous with doomy/doom metal - hence my dislike of the term.

Post Re: Question

Isn't Slowdive one of the first band to have received that label? It's a press thing..

In France, I know there've been a buch of projects taking inspiration from that kind of sound, in the early 2010.

Indeed... I have a couple of Slowdive's albums. First bands, although not "full blown" shoegaze, were acts like Jesus & Mary Chain, the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine... then you had Ride, Lush, Chapterhouse, Swervedriver, Spiritualised, Adorable, Pale Saints and even the Boo Radleys... man, brings back memories of living in London... :p

I’m liking this debut Jesu - just played the first two tracks. So there you have it, my first two ‘doomgaze’ songs are more than agreeable. Let’s see what the rest of the album is like now (and discography in time).

Thanks for that link Merchant of Doom, I think you’ve got me into a new subgenre to explore.

I’m armed with others now!

Playing the first one now. I can see why this is not classed as a sub genre of doom-metal. Quite different genealogically to the ears at first listen. Some shared sentiments sure.

Post Re: Question

Yes, TAP is not really doom, but if you listen to it in the context of early Jesu, Nadja and Methadrone the lines begin to blur, as it is quite similar to these bands in sound, aesthetics and feel, while the early phases of the aforementioned bands are doom for sure. Maybe TAP are so unique as they easily match them in intensity without being nearly as heavy as them.

Post Re: Question

With the risk of arguing semantics, did doom ever become a genre in and of itself? Apart from scattered funeral doom releases (Esoteric, Shape of Despair, Skepticism) I haven’t followed doom METAL for two decades.

Absolutely, with many sub-genres...
