Quick Introductory Interview.

Interview with Lycanthia.

1. Who are you and how did the band get started?

I am Lee Tassaker, of Lycanthia from Sydney, Australia. When I was younger, I always found a lot of my favourite parts with really heavy bands was the addition of a keyboard part or a female vocal part or an interlude with classical instrument playing. I found when I used to go and see these bands live, quite often they would leave out those elements, which used to disappoint me. So I wanted to start a band which would combine all of these types of elements and weren't just one off interludes, but the entire body of music, and that would be able to reproduce the music live as well.

2. Why did you choose Doom, and how would you describe your style?

Lycanthia is really a fusion of many different musical styles. I guess it best fits into the genre of Doom, or at least one of it's sub-genres. I enjoy many styles of metal but this style is the most appealing to me, because I feel I can really capture the feeling that I am trying to create with this music. There's no limitations to how long or short a segment can be, which is really useful when you create a mood/atmosphere. Basically, Lycanthia instrumentation is a combination of bass, guitars, drums, keyboards, violin, heavy male vocals and dual female vocals. We try to mix old school death/doom riffs with classical counter melodies and rich vocal harmonies.

3. What would you consider to be the high point of your career so far?

A few years ago we got to do a few dates on the Australian East Coast Tour with Dismember, but I guess the real high point is how happy we are with how our new album 'Oligarchy' turned out, the great response towards it and of course, most of all, just recently signing a deal with Hypnotic Dirge Records.

4. Which three bands most influenced you?

In the beginning, it was definitely a combination of My Dying Bride, early Theatre Of Tragedy and Tiamat. Of course these days those influences aren't as prominent, as many other influences have come into play, for instance Primordial has had a definite influence on some of our latest riffs. Although we have moved away from these original influences, I believe we have kept the essence of what we created when the band was started, or at least it's taken on a life of it's own and has become something more rich and dynamic

5. What are your plans for the near future?

At the moment we're demo-ing/writing for our next album. Also touring is on the cards.

6. If there is anything you would like to add, the last words are yours.

Firstly, thank you for your time with this interview. To everybody else, please check out our new album 'Oligarchy' which will also be released as a digipak version through Hypnotic Dirge Records early in 2013. Hopefully we will see you on tour sometime.
