Void of silence

Toward the dusk (CD) 2000 Nocturnal Music
A nightmare; an insane trip through subconscious realms; the little brother of Esoteric; visions of a demented mind; the slow immersion in a psychotic world of suffocating darkness…

Those descriptions could perhaps give an idea about the sound of this band. Void of silence hail from Italy, but show not many resemblances to the crème de la crème of the Italian underground (MonumentuM, Ras Algethi, Canaan…). They rather follow their own self-willed path which leads -like all roads do- to the deep and unavoidable darkness.

Dark keyboards, lingering guitars, vocals which alternate from deep grunts to insane screams and ambient chants, threatening string arrangements: all these ingredients are drowning in a pool of heavily reverbed effects which evoke an atmosphere of insanity and utter desolation. No rays of light of the Italian sun are able to penetrate this unworldy creation. Those Italian masters of negativity make sure that the despair and hopelessness last.

Highly recommended, especially to fans of Esoteric, that unique entity which probably showed those Italians where to find the one-way road to trippy, dark insanity.

Criteria ov 666 (CD) 2002 Code 666
Void of silence is, in the absence of the mighty Esoteric, this moment's most horrifying sonic embodiment of a nightmare in the dark metal scene. Their sound is drenched in heavy-weighting reverb effects, characterized by obscure samples, monotonous, unwordly chants, tortured screams and distortion guitars lingering in the background: the harbinger of an approaching apocalypse.

The nightmare concept the band elaborates on this album, is well chosen. It gives Void of silence the opportunity to unfold their mystic sound in a seemless endless journey through subconscious realms which most of us would rather avoid as the plague. Waves of chilling, icecold melancholy, immerse the listener in a state of negative contemplation. All plagues, disasters and hopeless defeats of this dashing humanity are summed up within 50 minutes of mind-torturing ambience.

The agonizing intensity of the music however, screams for a heavier sound. The guitars are -in the typical Italian dark metal tradition- mixed in the background and they don't weigh on the sound heavy enough for my taste. Therefore, Void of silence doesn't show (yet) the mind-numbing heaviness of bands like Esoteric and Evoken. Nevertheless, in the absence of bands brave enough to immerse themselves in such abysmal subconscious depths, I can only embrace the point of view of these mighty Italian dark lords and welcome them in the icecold world of emptiness and doom.

Human Antithesis (CD) 2004 Code 666
With their two previous albums, Riccardo Conforti and Ivan Zara have proven that their unique mix of dark electronics and doom metal brings forth some of the more original music in today's scene. With this one, they prove they can go beyond that and deliver a downright classic album. The recruitment of Alan Nemtheanga of Primordial fame on vocals was the perfect decision at the perfect time for Void of Silence.

From the diverse, epic title track, straight through to the sinister, Italian outro, 'Human Antithesis' takes you on a dark, dark journey through anger, depression, despair and mental oblivion. Majestic guitar leads over chugging riffs, powerful keyboards, pounding drums, combined with samples, electronics and dark ambiences and Alan's soaring clean vocals and sick screams and growls to top it off. That is the form. Doom is the message…
These are over 60 minutes of the darkest doom you'll ever hear. 'Human Antithesis' grips you by the throat and does not let you go until the last notes fade away into silence. It is hard to point out exactly what makes this album such a success. Alan’s clean vocals, which are exceptionally well suited to doom metal and the beautiful "Grey Horizon" are but two of the many highlights it contains.

Everything about this album is right. The music on itself is of the highest level in modern doom, but borne by the superb vocals, it transcends the genre. This is pure brilliance!
