Any doom-metal fan who has not heard of this band and would just stumble upon it in a record store will probably ignore it without any second thought. The artwork is covered up by a "Parental advisory - Explicit artwork" cover because it is extremely gory. When one reads the lyrics all sort of macabre stories are told about people being sliced open or having intercourse with & eating rotting corpses. All this of course in the high graphic detail like you would expect of a gore or grindcore band. Even the band name and album title suggest a grindcore band. So what is it doing being reviewed here then? That has a simple explanation, musically it actually is... doom-metal! Visceral Evisceration might be the only who sought the unholy combination of grindcore with doom-metal, as strange as that might sound. And it actually works extremely well if one ignores the silly lyrics and artwork. Slow epic doom-metal with clean male and female vocals (classical and normal) and grunts. Perhaps due to the grindcore influence the tempo sometimes picks up a bit and makes this truly a odd one out in the entire doom genre. Grind/doom, who would have thought it could be pulled off so well? Hell, who would have thought it could be pulled off at all! It is almost worth picking up just for the fact that its such an odd release. The band after the release of this album renamed to As I lay Dying, released one more promo tape and then disapeared of the face of the earth.. |
