This demo is short enough to be called a single, but the high quality in
both production and musicianship make up for that. They've also managed to
stick to a style that gives the band an identity of their own. All in all I
don't complain much about the length of the demo as it's the same length as
I would get if I pay for a 7".
Like many other gothic bands, Triarchy uses both clean male and
female vocals as well as grunts; a style called "beauty and the beast". What
is unusual, however, is that all of the vocals are done exceptionally well.
This might be a good time to point out that those who like stunningly
beautiful clean female vocals should hear this. Julia Hernandes knows how to
blow one away.
While there are touches of sadness in the music, it is melody, romance and
beauty that is highly prioritized in Triarchy. And that is not just
restricted to the guitars. There are also symphonic elements, a piano and
different other synths. It's definitely a rich and diverse band in a genre
that many find boring.
The fanbase for Triarchy should be quite large and while it includes
fans of clean female vocals, gothic metal, symphonic metal and gothic/doom,
they would still appeal to many others - even those who just like mainstream
metal like Nightwish or nu-goth like Evanescence. They do have
mainstream potential, but let's hope they never ruin themselves that
way.
I guess I've already made clear what I think of this demo. So I'll conclude
this review by posting a link to the bands myspace page: If you found yourself within any
of the categories I mentioned above, go and check out the samples. You might
be positively surprised.
