I can already hear you say "What the fuck? Thorr's Hammer?! Is doom-metal.com now also reviewing Viking-metal?". No, don't worry we aren't. Thorr's Hammer was in fact a project band of Greg Anderson (Goatsnake) and Steve O' Malley (Sunn 0))) & Burning Witch) who hooked up with the Norwegian female singer Runhild Gammelsaeter (also known as the ex-girlfriend of Ihsahn from Emperor). This mini album was allegedly recorded in just two evenings and offers us some slow rolling, heavy as a brick death/doom. Runhild can, aside from steal the heart of one of my reviewers, grunt better then most of her male counter parts. And by later mixing in her clear chanted vocals with the grunts, Thorr's Hammer manages to create a Nordic feel. Musically however, this act definately belongs to the heavier and rawer ones around. This is not for the light-hearted, nor for the hopeless romantic. This is some "heavy duty shit" so to say and definately not for the death/doom-o-fobic. However, if you are into the heavy, nihilistic stuff you simply need this release! Make sure you get the version with the 12 minute live track at the end as I believe there is also one out without that. |
