Stone Golem

I See Shadows/Stone Golem (Demo CD/Live CD) 2002 No Label
Yet another talented doom band from the North of England, Stone Golem seem to know very well how to use eclectically diverse influences from the extreme metal genre without turning into copycats or avantgarde weirdo’s. Their songs combine ultra heavy guitars, concrete bass, quite primitive drum work and screamy vocals which would –under normal circumstances- belong to the black metal genre.

Their music is slow paced, dark and psychedelic. The psychedelic influences –including feedback sounds which bring to mind a band like Electric Wizard become especially apparent in the live cd I was sent together with Stone Golem’s demo. The heavy riffs seem to get straight to the listener’s nervous system, causing a certain epileptic condition, which includes frantically headbanging to those hypnotic rhythms with eyes wildly staring into the void. Dangerous, very dangerous music.

Stone Golem clearly know well the secrets of their trade and play their music with passion and conviction. It’s psychedelic, it’s groovy, and it’s brutal and heavy. If any of these words and their combinations appeals to you (and how can one resist such a mix anyway?) then write to morwell@hotmail.com and get yourself a demo of this talented band.
