As a doom metal reviewer, sometimes you feel that the world of doom metal only consists of one-man projects. You would almost forget that there was a time when bands reigned supreme in the genre’s firmament. This project from Bulgaria is no exception to the rule. Sadly, although there are interesting ideas and I definitely approve of its reverence for nature and the earth we live in, the grand emotions invoked by this reverence are expressed in the most lifeless and monotonous way. How can one capture nature’s beauty through a monotonous drum computer rhythm in 4/4? How can this ever evolving, ever changing planet we call earth be even remotely described by the use of synth flutes and pseudo strings? No, times have changed and I would like to think that even in Bulgaria it should be possible nowadays to acquire decent equipment and record an album of which the sound and musicianship reflects at least part of the creative mind’s ambition. |
