An interesting dose of filthy, dirty sludge that should appeal to fans of bands such as EyeHateGod and maybe even Grief. Rwake has a strong hardcore feel to it, evident both in the fairly raw production, as well as the vocal style (which oscillates between screams and more stoner-type moaning). Unlike bands like Grief, Rwake's guitars are not as loud and crushing in the mix, which deprives them of some of heaviness that is usually required in sludge to make it truly effective. Between the array of slow pounding drums and noisy riffs Rwake also occasionally implements more experimental sounds (noisy synth tones, etc) that shows some echoes of early Neurosis as well. The onslaught of noisy sludge is from time to time balanced with calmer, acoustic sections, proving that Rwake is definitely not an one-dimensional outfit, even though the lack of a truly crushing production (and maybe a bit stronger songwriting) stops it somewhat from delivering a fully convincing dose of aural ugliness. |
