Krux is meant to be Leif Edling`s outlet for those idea’s that didn’t fit in the concept which he has in mind for the reformed Candlemass. For this record he managed to gather around him an impressive array of experienced musicians such as Jorgen and Peter from Entombed. Opener `Black room` sets the mood of this album with its monstrously heavy, powerful opening riff, which immediately reminds us what we are here for: raw power, emotion and primitive heaviness are the ingredients which make of doom the unique brand of metal that it is. And the word `metal` is certainly at its place here, as the tracks take us back to a time when traditional and epic doom ruled supreme. However, the album is certainly not food for old-school metal fans only, as the modern, heavy production makes it sound contemporary and more relevant than ever in a music industry where `metal` became synonymous with bands playing hip hop with low tuned guitars.
Vocalist Mats Leven`s Ozzy mannerisms (not unlike those of Bjorn Flödkvist in `From the 13th sun`) create a certain deja-vue effect, but his voice is fortunately more in line with the powerful riffing: it’s steady, strong and in tune. Speaking about the riffing, I must say that it has been much too long since I heard an album with so many strong riffs. I guess Leif couldn`t write a weak riff even if he tried. The excellent production highlights the outstanding rhythm guitar work while guest musicians Nicko and Fredrik spoil us at regular intervals with superior guitar solo`s. Add to all this the smart use of subtle mellotrons and moog synthesizers and the well-dosed (contrary to Candlemass` last studio album) experimentation with high-tech effects and you`ll understand that we are talking about a candidate for the doom album of the year here.
