Let me start this review by stating that this demo kicks seriously ass. Indesinence manages with only a dark intro and two lengthy tracks, to give an impressive demonstration of their talent and skills. Their brutal brand of doom can be compared to the relentless ultradoom of bands like disEMBOWELMENT, Ceremonium, Dusk and Winter. Both tracks enjoy a stunning (certainly for demo standards), heavy production that emphasizes the low-end spectrum of the band's sound. The rambling guitar vibe is simply phenomenal, while the heavily reverbed, pervasive grunts sound almost identical to those of the mighty Ceremonium. Powerful, menacing riffs are alternated with short, calmer interludes and some occasional outbursts are also introduced to ensure that there is enough variety in the compositions. Throughout this work, there is a threatening, dark graveyard atmosphere and this demo should be ideal to terrify your annoying parents or preachy neighbour with. Are you into the more extreme realms of death/doom? Then invest in Indesinence, because I foresee a great future for this band in my crystal ball! With new bands like Catacombs, Ataraxie and Indesinence, the extreme doom genre proves to be the next step in the doom/death evolution after the somewhat worn-out romantic doom death in the tradition of the three Peaceville giants. London-based Indesinence are a relatively new name in the international extreme doom scene, but this debut album should earn them enough attention for the future, as 'Noctambulism' is a killer release. Indesinence manage to select the absolute best elements from over 15 years of death/doom history, and distill their own strong spirit from it. Expect a healthy dose of diSEMBOWELMENT-style up-tempo riffs and a big slab of Evoken as well. Indesinence stay extremely dynamic and energetic throughout this long album, which is quite a feat. Here and there the heavy assault abates slightly, and we receive calmer melodic interludes, sometimes even a bit ambient. Another interesting part is the extensive ending of "Flooding (In Red)", which reminds one of Esoteric with its funeral atmospheres and intense vocals. As you may have judged from all the name-dropping, this isn't the most original album. Nevertheless, 'Noctambulism' is totally convincing, and above all, gripping. I find it hard to resist all the energy that comes from this album. Truly the most crushing death/doom release of the year. |
