Somewhere between the blackened ambient doom of Nortt and the avantgarde doom of Quercus lies an ocean of immense potentiality, that is called Grívf. This one-man project from Denmark creates a unique and otherworldly atmosphere, in the tradition of the more recent (’Filosofem’ and beyond) musical output of Burzum.
The man behind this project fully employs artistic freedom in expressing his take on isolation and misanthropy. Traditionally essential instrumentation in the metal genre like the use of drums and a steady rhythm is here completely absent. The music is floating free in space, creating introspective soundscapes of misanthropic contemplation. Vocals vary from sepulchral whispers to sorrow-laden screams and serene chants. While most of the music is characterized by acoustic ambient soundscapes, it also takes a more dramatic turn at times with the addition of blackened guitar distortion. Compared to its compatriot Nortt, Grívf’s sound is immersed in apathy rather than depression, offering a more varied spectrum of moods and ambience.
I have ranted more than once before about the incompetence of contemporary one-man projects, but Grívf proves that when talent and genuine emotion are available, the fertile ground of isolation can breed creativity and inspiration.
