To achieve their arena based traditional doom/stoner/progressive metal sound, the band had to sacrifice more than a few moments to a higher and less doomy pace. However, when you get strong riffage of this kind, with plenty of groove and motion, then it's a trade-off that I'm sure many will find well worth it. Another thing that's well suited for their live energy is that they've made their music pretty straightforward, and utilize classic sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lyrics. In other words, music well suited for a beer and brown spirits party.
Clearly these guys have aimed for a spot well above the ground, but there is no lack of originality. If you can sound like Black Sabbath and The Devin Townsend Band at the same time, like these guys do, then you're in a position that doesn't have any major names attached to it yet. In all likelihood I believe Gorilla Monsoon will end up taking that spot in time.
In essence, if you want heavier arena based matal with a loud atmosphere and plenty of good bits to bang your head to, then this is indeed a good choice. I'm quite certain that these guys appeal to a larger audience than just the doom community. Those who prefer underground music won't be impressed, but if you're interested in some pure, honest, kick-ass metal, then this is for you.
