The G.A.T.E.S. was a thrash/speed/death metal band started by Church of Misery vocalist Yoshiaki Negishi and bassist Tatsu Mikami. It was originally created to play covers of the British heavy metal bands Tank and Motörhead. Those who know anything about ‘70s metal would know that track seven, 'Overkill' is indeed a Motörhead cover. 'Total Death' is a compilation of all the tracks they ever released during the band’s existence between 2002 and 2003. The last three tracks come from the 2003 demo 'DEMONlition 1' and the remaining come from a split with Metal Skull: 'Total High Society Satanic Rocks'. I have to stress that this review is not done because this is a doom band in any way. I'm doing it because it's an interesting piece of information for those who'd like a bit of Church of Misery history. Simply put, the music is high paced, brutal, and aggressive. It's got a good groove and beats many of the ‘80s speed metallers. Still, it's quite short and not all that special, so make sure you really want this before buying. |
