Divine Silence

Promise You (CD) 2001 Dark Wish Productions
This album seems to be self-released, although on the band's site it reads that they are picked up by the now defunct Crestfallen Records. In 2003, the band split up as well. This 2001 album brings us 7 songs in a quite identical style. A mid-paced, melodic kind of metal, with grunts, clean parlando-singing and some female vocals. At times, the album has a bit more of a gothic rock feel to it as well.

The first track starts with a riff strongly reminiscent of Lake of Tears: melodic, repetitive and quite catchy. However, as the album goes on, we find the same formula over and over again; a catchy melody is constantly repeated, to be followed by more of the same.

Although the sound is pretty good (I especially like the sound of the bass), it can't make up for the lack of songs. The clean vocals are a bit dull, while the grunts are quite standard. Variation within a song is non-existent. The lyrics are darkly gothic rhymes talking about romantic topics like the longing for a love that unreachable. However, the song 'To Live or Die' struck me as an exception to this, with lyrics about the fear of a man when standing and awaiting the clash with the enemy on a battlefield.

Fans of bands like Lake of Tears, Katatonia and atmospheric, melodic rock/metal in general might appreciate this album, but it can't keep my attention long enough to remain interesting all the way through.
