This is the demo effort of this Italian band. Bloody Wings bring mid-paced doom/death with keyboards. They do not make the mistake of trying to sound too much like an existing band and while the music is easily linked to others in the doom/death genre, it does not give the impression of being a mere copy. That said, the song structures are very simplistic. There is very little variation in rhythm and riffing style and this makes the songs less interesting than they could have been. The melodies are quite atmospheric however, and they could work out well if a little more attention was paid to the songwriting. The production is fine for a demo, but the mixing for the guitars is a little off, which gives the whole thing a rather 'light' feel. If this band invests more work into their work, they could come up with a very decent demo in the near future. At this point, however, it is far below the mark. In 2003, Bloody Wings sent in their first promo to us. A lot has changed since then, and the Italian band have made big step forward with their first self-released CD. The style is still the same: doom/death, with relatively little frills, except for the use of - surprisingly - very good violin playing in some parts. The keyboards are also used, but thankfully they are put in a good place in the mix, so that they do not overpower the other instruments, as is the case with some artists. The production is immensely better than on the promo, although it is still a bit lacking compared to that of signed artists. The album begins with a keyboard intro reminiscent of My Dying Bride's 'Silent Dance'. Towards the end of the song, the violin kicks in with an eerie melody. The rest of the CD consists of slow doom/death with excellent deep growls and heavy riffs with occasional leads and violin. Here and there a few faster parts are present. Sadly, in some parts, there is a tad too little variation in the songs, which keeps this album from reaching a higher level. With this release, Bloody Wings have proven capable of a huge improvement over the previous work. While this is still not very original music, and there are a few points which need to be worked on, the band can be satisfied with their latest effort. Keep going, I'd say, and we'll see what these Italians come up with in another two years. Until then, lovers of underground doom/death might want to check this one out; chances are you'll like it. |
