Avrigus is an Australian atmospheric doom band by Simon Gruer and Judy Chiara. And they have not been getting the attention they deserve. This for some part is due to the fact that the distribution of this album is downright terrible. Creating warm sounding atmospheric doomy metal with mainly female vocals this an album to dream away on. Next to the female vocals there sometimes are some, also clean, male backing vocals. I guess the female vocals are a hate 'em or love 'em case. If you are not too keen on female vocals to begin with you will probably not enjoy them. Musically they rely heavily on keys and piano. This is what gives the music its warm yet melancholic feeling. The entire album overflows with atmosphere and a slightly dreamy atmosphere. My only complaint in this is the totally pointless track 'Desolate' that seems to be a 3 minute noise intro to the following track 'Flesh'. |

Released through the Hammerheart sublabel Well of Urd we finally see the first Avrigus full length released on CD! For a long time the band had to make due with releasing it on mp3 because no label was interested. So what does this album bring us? Well it brings us high quality atmospheric doom-metal with an epic feel to it. Like most atmospheric doom-metal heaviness gets sacrificed to give a more melancholic and sad feel to the music. What Avrigus however also add it an epic, warrior like feel to the music. With some songs one could almost think they are a doom-metal version of Bal Sagoth, but without ever sounding cheesy! At other times however the music mainly focuses on melancholy and sadness. While some songs bring both together to create majestically wonderful songs like 'Dark Angels Ascension' and 'Qliphoth'. However despite this epicfeel one can still at times simply float away on the tranquil music. Both 'Desolate' and 'Flesh' from the previous Mcd 'The Final Wish' are also featured on this album. One could say that, this is a cheap way to fill an album but seeing how hard it is to actually get 'The Final Wish' I guess this is not a big issue here. |
