| Ocean - Pantheon Of The Lesser (2008) |

Creeping and crawling along similar desolate, darkened paths as Burning Witch, Sunn O))), even Neurosis and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, minimalist Drone/Doom merchants Ocean have released, no, failed to contain their latest exercise in misanthropic brutality 'Pantheon Of The Lesser'.
Not for the faint hearted or for the impatient, 'Pantheon Of The Lesser' is nearly an hour of atmospheric cruelty laid to tape. The down-tuned guitars, both clean and heavy, carry an air of morbidity throughout each and every movement. The vocals are a blend of airy female despair (provided by Yoshiko Ohara of Bloody Panda), nearly sub-sonic funerary roars and angry, bone chilling shrieks. One feels as if they’re being slowly overtaken and destroyed by 'The Beacon' (which stops just short of 36 minutes) while 'Of The Lesser' (barely crossing the 23 minute mark) is a perfect combination of suffocating drone and bludgeoning Doom.
Playing like a cinematic nightmare, 'Pantheon Of The Lesser' delivers on every level. It rises, it falls, it frightens and it soothes. It cradles the psyche one moment and sweeps it into the abyss the next. Crushing both soul and skull, Ocean has indeed created an essential album. |

On the other hand they set themselves apart from the other bands by making grooving music, but without any stoner elements. ...
