There is just not enough Traditional Doom Metal in the world today, so thankfully The Wandering Midget has arrived to contribute to the cause. Heavily influenced by the tried and true sounds of bands like Count Raven and Reverend Bizarre, Finnish trio The Wandering Midget is here to grind to dust all in its path.
Heavy. That’s the word that best describes 'The Serpent Coven'. Six-ton guitars drag along like giant stones pulled by tortured slaves building a monument to all that is Doom. The bass and drums are the dry, barren earth serving as the foundation for the towering structure. Postured, resonant vocals deliver messages of cultish dread and morbid fantasy. Yet, all of this would be meaningless without the song-craft to back it up and this is where The Wandering Midget truly delivers.
Aside from the intro, the songs clock in at no less than eight and a half minutes. The songs on offer here, topping off at the near 14-minute mark with 'Family Curse', showcase a band that cares more about creating an aural landscape than it does empty hooks. It crushes like a millstone one minute and entrances like a siren the next. 'Bring Forth The Accused' stands out as well, sounding like a sonic death sentence... A long walk to the gallows pole. Throughout the nearly hour long disc, you'll not be subjected to a second of boredom, but you will succumb to its somber majesty.
Yes, many thanks to The Wandering Midget for holding fast to the traditions of our Doom forefathers while creating music that will withstand the erosion of time. You won’t find anything new or avant-garde on 'The Serpent Coven', but what you will find is sure to leave a lasting impression. |

... Crowbar doesn't sound like Eyehategod. They have a very unique sound that only a few bands have continued. But they still share many aspects with other sludge/doom bands, like the "scream the lungs out" vocals and heavy riffage, for example. On the other hand they set themselves apart from the other bands by making grooving music, but without any stoner elements. ...
