| Autumnia - o'Funeralia (2008) |

Well, I'm a sucker for melodic Doom/Death stuff, so when 'o'Funeralia' by Ukrainian band Autumnia, landed on my doormat, I couldn’t help but smiling. I already had enjoyed the band’s previous opus, 'By The Candles Obsequial', so everything was in place for an exquisite aural experience. I wasn’t to be disappointed.
Autumnia consists of guitarist and composer Alexander Glavniy (ex Mournful Gust and ex Vae Solis [Ukr]) and Vladislav Shahin (ex Vae Solis [Ukr] and also ex Mournful Gust), in charge of the vocal parts and the lyrics. Guest musicians are Yuriy Baygush (piano in 'Blessing Your Illness'), Sergey Vinnik (violin) and Igor Guy (bass).
The pace of the music is generally quite slow, sometimes verging on funeral doom, with heavy doses of keyboards, sharp and monolithic guitar and beautiful violin parts, which suddenly explode and grab you by the throat. The drumming is consistent and varied, solid, powerful and precise at the same time.
Every song is about 10 minutes long, apart from the sorrow, piano-lead 'Falling Asleep With Entreaty’'and 'By The Candles Obsequial', bizarrely named after their second album and which clocks at 13 min.
It's impossible not to fall for the beauty of the melodies, the deep growls and clean vocals, and the recurrent, but well executed, atmospheric gothic imagery. If you like melodic, mournful and depressive doom/death, with a smattering of romanticism, 'o'Funeralia' comes highly recommended... |

...where ultra-slow funeral doom plod along with it's misery, nihilism and hideous death. In the two latter tracks a little more melody and an even stronger feeling of nihilism is brought in along with clear elements of Until Death Overtakes Me...
