Mannhai : Evil Under The Sun

Mannhai may be from Finland, but they represent exactly the opposite of the depressive extreme doom scene of this Scandinavian country. Their stoner/desert rock is shamelessly groovy, uptempo and uplifting. It's one of those albums that make (most of) us bang our heads energetically while we take an occasional sip of our beer. And five minutes after the end of the CD, we have already forgotten about it.

'Evil Under The Sun' is this band's second effort already, although they only formed in 1999. I must admit that - dark music adorer that I am - I would never buy this album or any album with riffs trying to inject any sunshine or happiness in my life, although I can imagine that Mannhai's unpretentious heavy rock 'n roll could make for an entertaining live experience.

Unfortunately the link of such albums to the doom metal genre has remained unclear to me, hence I hesitate to recommend it to any doom metal fan (let alone to extreme doom freaks). The current 'stoner' rock explosion led by the gigantic success of the last Queens of the Stone Age album might lead this band to commercial success as well. In either case I wish them good luck and I hope that the fans of simple, genuine rock 'n roll who occasionally visit this site check out Mannhai.
