|The interestingly named Loosin' O Frequencies is a group of happy stoned-out doomsters hailing from Italy. This three-song promo is their second, following on the heels of 'Regeneration', which was recorded in 1999 under the aegis of none other than eccentric doom lord Paul Chain.|
After three out of five group members were replaced, the band eventually recorded this three-song taster for their upcoming album, entitled 'Glorify the Life that Grows Under the Sun'. And just what kind of life would that be? Well, a doomed life for starters. The EP opens with an amazingly strong tune, 'The Sunshine Stealer'. So strong, in fact, that I couldn't get the dazed grin off of my face. We're dealing with some serious trad doom here, played to the nines. Amidst the crushing guitars and percussion vocalist Max sounds like he's got a nice Bobby Liebling vibe going, the best I've heard since Conan of Iron Kind (who has to win hands down, ha ha). When the synths come in you've got a damned-near perfect marriage of Pentagram, 'Sabbath and Hawkwind. It doesn't get much better than this. The next song, 'Lovergod', is IMO the weakest. It's infused with a NWOBHM sensibility that doesn't play well to the strengths I found in 'Sunshine Stealer', although if you worship old 'Priest, 'Maiden, or even early Van Halen your mileage may vary. 'Masterdoom' gets us back to the right territory, with a slower pace that evokes recent Butch-era Penance. Doom baby!
The Loosin' boys haven't updated their website in awhile; lets hope its because they're out shopping their CD. After all, this is first-rank doom from deep in the Italian underground, and it deserves to be heard along with all the other tuneage that's currently forming the rising tide of doom around the world.
