Jack Frost : Selfabusing Uglysex Ungod

A well done mixture of gothic metal and My Dying Bride-style doom metal. The band's biggest asset is undoubtedly their vocalist, whose mournful voice has a truly deep emotional undercurrent to it. At times it reminds me a bit of My Dying Bride's Aaron's performance on 'Like Gods of The Sun', although musically Jack Frost are more of a mid-tempo gothic metal outfit.

Guitar-wise, most of the metal elements come from the rhythm guitar's straightforward chords, which are balanced with a clean, gothic-rock style lead guitar that provides most of the melodic element of each song. It's a simple, uncomplicated approach, but works quite well, as Jack Frost is capable of coming up with memorable melodies that make everything work together.

With the excellent vocal performance rounding everything off, 'Self Abusing Uglysex Ungod' is a fairly relaxed release that provides a good mixture of dark moodiness and thick guitar heaviness, not that far maybe from the likes of Cemetary. Simple, yet enjoyable.
