Holy Martyr : Hail To Hellas

I am not quite sure if I should review this here, as we are not strictly dealing with Doom-metal in this case. But this album has impressed me greatly and holds quite a few Doomy riffs. Holy Martyr plays old school - or true - Heavy Metal, influenced by bands such as Manowar and Doomsword (who play some form of Doomy Epic Metal for those that don't know them). So I will shamelessly use the link to Doomsword as my reason for this review and their link with to the Doom-metal genre. Holy Martyr are also influenced by the mighty Candlemass, Thunderstorm, Cirith Ungol and a great deal of other great bands. Not every influence is directly detectible in their music, but it should give you an idea what kind of music you can expect.

As the title might suggest, the album is a tribute to ancient Greece. The songs deal with ancient battles fought in this country and are one by one epic eposes themselves. Every single song is majestic, epic and has a true sense of battle emanating from it. It takes you back to an age of heroes and mighty warriors. 'Defenders In the Name of Hellas...' even features ancient battle sounds!

Musically Holy Martyr know their stuff. From the very tightly played compositions to balancing out all the music elements (epic, fast and doomy sections) perfectly. This is one of the biggest improvements on their previous effort. Every song is simply perfectly balanced, making the entire album a joy to listen to.

If you however are looking for gothic romance or horrific death-grunts, then this release will probably not be your thing. Holy Martyr play pure heavy-metal with Doomy influences. Making it a joy to the older metal fans and fans of true (heavy) metal. I doubt however this will do much for those looking for keyboards and female vocals or stoner grooves. It might be worth a try never the less. You never know, you might like it!

Note that the band has only printed a limited copy of this album and as such if you want one you might need to hurry. It might be worth enquiring about the T-shirt that goes with the album as well if you do decide to order as that too looks pretty good! E-mail contact: . Website: http://www.holy-martyr.com. An amazing band so check them out!!
