Hedon Cries : Hate Into Grief

Hedon Cries is a band from Greece, founded in 2002. This album here was their debut from 2003, then released through the (horribly named) Sleaszy Rider Records. Apparently this deal didn't turn out well for the band, as they are now forced to send out their own self-made promo's of the album, to fix a deal for their new album, which has already been recorded.

So, what does Hedon Cries bring us? Well, the album starts with a long-drawn keyboard intro with spoken word vocals. After that the second song breaks loose with some up-tempo melodic doom/death metal - what a surprise, huh? The other songs also fit into this niche perfectly. The tempo varies from moderately slow to moderately fast, here and there there are keyboard interludes, and the (double) lead guitars play the lead role throughout the album, accompanied by growls.

"Does the album have any merits?", one might think. Well sure, for one, the sound qualitiy and production are excellent, so no points lost there. Furthermore, the music is played very well throughout, and Hedon Cries show themselves to be quite capable musicians. Sadly, though, that's about all this album has going for it. The biggest flaw of 'Hate Into Grief' has to be the utter lack of originality, whether it be musically or thematically. Only the most ardent lovers of simple romantic doom/death could find this album pleasing, and I am not one of them, obviously. One can only hope that the next album has improved in the originality department.
