Heathendom : Heathendom

The short, consise and firm riffing of power metal have always been hard to fit into doom metal. However, from Athens comes a band that actually manages to do so. This is a not a mixture of traditional doom and power metal. This is pure and real power/doom though it of course includes a fair share of uptempo sections.

It should be duly noted that not all of the music on the CD is doom metal. For example the instrumental track 'Mental Pabulum' doesn't have more than a few sections. But that doesn't stop me from recommending this to all fans of traditional doom. It really does sound promising. Especially those who enjoy Forsaken would like these guys as the feeling of the music is very similar.

The power metal elements are of the older, heavy metal inspired kind. Two bands that come to mind are Judas Priest and Morgana Lefay. If you are expecting some of the European power metal in the vein of Stratovarius then you'll quickly realize that you've been mistaken. It's also important to put some emphasis on the fact that there is a lot of gregorian elements. However since the lyrics are mostly harsh attacks on the christian churches, there might be little room for christian fans.

Another way of describing the demo is that it's agressive as well as highly epic and melodic. Amongst other things they have a choir on the first track, an amazing double piano intro on 'Mental Pabulum' and a heavy use of acoustic guitar and orchestral elements on the 11 minute long 'Haunted Within'.

I would without doubt say that these guys are highly inventive and shows signs of a very promising future. And as a bonus, it is really hard to keep calling this a demo since it has a better production quality then many albums. The cover and CD are professionally printed as well. According to my ears, this is a keeper.
