Gideon Smith & the Dixie Damned : Southern Gentlemen

There's a recent trend in the world of stoner rock towards a more southern fried but still heavy sound. Bands such as Alabama Tunderpussy and Small Stone labelmates Five Horse Johnson and Halfway to Gone are firing up the stoned-out bluesy riffs and marching down a road of Yankee bones to a promised land where the rivers flow with southern comfort. And the ironic thing is that many of these bands hail from north of the Mason/Dixon line!

Well, not Gideon Smith and the Dixie Damned, no sir! Gideon Smith is from North Carolina, and with a name like the Dixie Damned..well..chances are they're not from Iceland. These boys serve up the real thing, and they're probably working up a thirst that throws its own shadow while they're doing it! 'She is Venus' starts things off right with Gideon's strong, clean vocals and some soaring, spacey slide guitar from "Shine" Kelleher. 'Whiskey Devil' shows that 'The 'Damned spend a good part of their spare time smokin' and drinkin', and 'Outerspace Girl' floats along like Lynyrd Skynyrd sparking up with the robot from the 60s TV show Lost in Space. Throughout the whole album 'The Dixie Damned work as a tight unit, with no superfluous showing off.

Most of the songs on 'Southern Gentlemen' are mid-paced, with a few ass-kickers and a ballad or two thrown in to spice things up. As I listened to the album, I kept thinking that Gideon's vocal's reminded me of someone, but it took awhile to figure out who it was: Sweden's HalfMan! Both their vocals are strong, clean, and bluesy. Devotees of the aforementioned southern-fried stoner bands, as well as fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers will dig this. If you're ready for some prime southern swamp rock, this will be just the shot in the arm you needed!
