The Funeral Orchestra : Feeding the Abyss

You wake up to the sound of women (or are it men?) screaming, the crack of whips and insane chanting. You are being dragged down into the deepest dungeon imaginable. As you go ever deeper and deeper into the bowels of the earth, one low, throbbing sound starts to dominate all the others until it drowns out everything. It is the sound of doom and in the world of The Funeral Orchestra there is no escape possible from its solid grasp.

'Feeding The Abyss' is the first full length release by this Swedish band and it is sure to be one of the more surprising albums of the year. The ten songs are all extremely slow (a true funeral pace) and feature heavy, monotonous riffs, intensive grunts and rock solid drumming.

TFO. create an extremely sick atmosphere on this album, which is at the same time irresistible. Every song, be it an ultra-slow doom juggernaut or a dark ambient interlude full of sick samples of keening women and cruel whip cracks, will draw you into that 'Apocalyptic Trance Ritual' that seems to be the general theme of the whole album. I must admit, after hearing the album several times, that there seem to be little things I would rather do than give in to that feeling and just succumb to the doom for a while. I'm sure I won't be the only who feels this way after listening to this wonderful debut.

So, I guess it's time to shed our daily outfits, slip into some stuffy robes and get out on the streets to preach the gospel of DOOM.
