|Eyes of Ligeia is the one-man project of Toby Chappell, an individual which invests his energy in the creation of dark, dismal, extreme underground doom. The project has got some online following thus far thanks to its mp3.com site and online promotion.|
It's very hard to describe this band's sound, although its label claims that it plays doom death in the truest sense of the word. Eyes of Ligeia combines slow-paced parts with distortion guitar and grunts reminiscent of doom death (but not of any band in particular) with long instrumentals full of bleak, nihilistic clean guitar work. The creation of atmosphere is the central issue here, as the tracks lack a coherent structure, any lead harmonies or even the slightest hint of melody.
One would say that those elements still make up for quite an interesting listen, but unfortunately this is not the case with Eyes of Ligeia. Both the distorted parts as the instrumentals sound quite uninspired and lack essence and passion. The flat production certainly doesn't help here, as the guitar sounds as if it was recorded on a home computer, the drums (which are supposed to be real) sound weak and tedious and the grunt is quite uninteresting and lacks conviction. The compositions themselves lack dynamics and interesting hooks to hold the listener's attention.
The creation of bleak, nihilistic music requires a lot of skills: it's a fine line between dissonant, non-melodic music and tedious, uninspired compositions. The difference between those two is called essence, and you only have it when you work with passion and have a statement to make. In my opinion, this artist lacks both at the moment.
