Devils & His spells : Devils And His Spells

This band is now known as Hermetic Vastness, but during their first release, which is this demo, their name was Devils & His Spells. It's a possibility that the 's' in 'devils' is a typo based on a lack of English qualifications. But the fact that they used '&' in their band name and 'and' on the name of this s/t demo makes me think that it could have been done deliberately for some reason.

It's somewhat hard to label these Brazilian guys as traditional doom as the extremely epic nature of this band makes its atmosphere resemble power metal bands like Rhapsody or Freedom Call more than they resemble Black Sabbath or Candlemass. However the basis of the music is indeed based on traditional doom with an epic twist. This is not to say that the band isn't liable to kick off in a surprisingly high tempo.

Doomsword is probably the one band that one could group Devils & His Spells together with. They both play the same kind of heroic and extremely epic kind of traditional doom. If you like Doomsword then you'll like these guys too.

The most epic of all the elements in the music is the clean male vocals. They are extremely bright and powerful. Once again the band is comparable to many power metal bands as they often use the same kind of vocals. Then especially the European bands who follow the footsteps of Stratovarius.

The demo is out for free on the band's homepage. The tracks are low quality, but I haven't thought twice about it. The quality is good enough to make the music enjoyable and honestly I don't think the quality of the original recording is much better anyways.
