Desire : Locus Horrendus - The Night Cries Of A Sullen Soul...

Desire have created one of the better releases in Atmospheric Death Doom which fans of the style shouldn't miss.

Desire released this album to celebrate their 10 years of existence, and despite its pretentiously long album title it is a fine piece of Dark/Doom-metal. 'Locus Hurrendus-' offers a steady and lengthy stream of misery and despair. All you mournful souls looking for diverse atmospheric doom-metal need to check this release out a.s.a.p.!

Being almost 70 minutes long, Desire has managed to create a very captivating and diverse album. The music ranges from short intermezzos to more aggressive-driven dark-metal songs, through to downright painfully slow death/doom. On one track their vocalist uses a sick gutteral scream over mid-paced dark-metal, whilst on another he whispers quietly over keyboards, samples of lighting and painfully slow doom. Other tracks are downright heavy and the embodiment of what I would call Death/Doom; slow grinding guitars and rhythm section with a very pleasurable yet sick sounding death grunt.

Wonderfully lush keyboard sections, slow brooding guitars, deep grunts, spoken words, the occasional female vocals; all pass by your speakers when listening to this album. Sometimes this causes bands in general to sound unfocused and to lack direction. Luckily Desire does not suffer from this effect, for the main part because they keep the various styles separated in each song.

I would recommend this album to all fans of Dark-metal or Death/Doom-metal. This is one of the higher quality releases within the genre this year. It won't blow you away with originality but then again, what in this style ever does? Very well executed, comfortably melancholic and overall very entraining and pleasing to listen to. For those of you in need of references think of a song like 'The Underworld' or 'Christ Goodbye' by Saturnus and you'll have a good idea what to expect.

The only downside I could find to this album is that it is a bit on the cheesy side at times, particularly some of the samples in between the songs and the vocals. But the ultra heavy Death/Doom sections more than make up for this every time.
