Ruini Vechnosti : Shopot Zabytykh Kholmov

An interesting experiment, but in the end a little too disjointed: Руины Вечности's debut venture.

Whatever I was expecting from Russian band Ruins Of Eternity, it certainly wasnít this! From the very start, the band goes on the offensive with some aggressive Death/Doom tinted with the odd strings interlude. The whole composition was incredibly dramatic, really.

I have to admit that the intensity didnít exactly blow me away, though. The growled vocals were good but they lacked the Ďevilí sound to pull off this kind of approach, which was something that diSEMBOWELMENT used to do brilliantly, and the Australian band is what I perceive as being the aim for a band like Ruins Of Eternity. The Russians arenít doppelgangers by any means but the foundation of their music is very much rooted in old Death/Doom, hence the comparison.

The most curious factor here was their use of violin, though. How exactly do you seamlessly slip the sound of a violin into harsh Death/Doom? Some Doom bands over the years have perfected it but theyíve all had to play a lot slower music in order to capture the ultimately emotional essence of the strings instrument. Ruins Of Eternity hasnít done that here, which is a bold move but itís not exactly paid off. I wonít say itís backfired because this element has at least prevented 'The Whispers Of Forgotten Hills' from being lost in a pile of mediocrity but itís certainly not been the leading light they were seemingly hoping for, based on its almost incessant use on this release.

At the stage when piano music was introduced, I was scratching my head as to why this band has opted to roll the Death/Doom dice in such an aggressive fashion. Letís face it - haunting female vocals, violins, and piano music makes for a winning formula for slower and more emotional Death/Doom more often than not. Fusing those elements like Ruins Of Eternity has here is strange, to say the least, and I donít believe it works for them, unfortunately.

I canít really fault the production on The Whispers Of Forgotten Hills'; everything seems to be in order there. The only bit on this album that I completely rejected in my head was their harsh vocals because for some reason, it almost sounded like they were rapping at times. Rapping. I know! I donít speak Russian so I couldnít possibly say it with any certainty but thatís the impression I got at certain points during the album and I didnít enjoy those segments at all.

To summarise, Iíd say that if there was such a thing as a Folk and Death/Doom crossover, then this would be it. As far as I am concerned, the experiment conducted on this release was interesting but unsuccessful. Musically, it was a fun adventure to take and Iíd probably enjoy watching this band live because theyíre very intense and dramatic. However, when it comes to merely listening to the music, itís a bit too disjointed for my liking. If the band adopted a slower approach to Death/Doom, I feel like theyíd have a lot of success. For now, itís a bit middle-of-the-road for me.
