Moaning Silence : Fragrances From Yesterdays (EP)

Well performed and saccharine sweet, but with far too much pomp metal and nowhere near enough Doom.

With a title like that, you might think that Greece's Moaning Silence (terrible name) would have been better served leaving the EP's monicker in its original Greek. I don't think it translates too well. It's a bit too...er...flowery. Then again, they've got 'gothic' as one of their Bandcamp tags. I dunno, throwing a female singer into a metal act next to a shouty man doesn't always make it 'gothic'. There's a lot that calls itself gothic these days which isn't. That is unless the genre now includes well polished Euro 'pomp' metal. Apparently it does. I imagine Evanescence fans would have creamed themselves to this ten or so years ago. Not entirely sure what they're all up to now. Probably all covered in tattoos and listening to Noothgrush, trying to pretend the whole sorry thing never happened.

Look, I'm not gonna beat about the bush. This is awful. Granted, it's very well performed and the production is the sonic equivalent of salted caramel donuts covered in chocolate sauce but I really don't know who this is aimed at (people who needed grief counselling after Tarja left Nightwish, I would imagine). The only positive thing I could find, is that some of the riffing is partially reminiscent of latter day Funeral, but all of that and the hint of sober Autumnal emotion is flattened stone dead by a turgid cover of The Beatles 'Yesterday'. There really is no excuse. Believe you me, I like a bit of Draconian from time to time, and not everything Within Temptation do is appalling but f*** me, this is just wrong, on so many levels.

'Dare to take the trip with us...?' asks Moaning Silence. No. Seriously, no. Just no. No.
