[BeforeTheRain] : ...And With The Day Dying Light

Fans of Darren White era Anathema pay attention, this Portuguese band might be something for you. If you always felt sad about Anathema's change of style and the fact that they didn't continue on the path set on 'Pentecost III', Before The Rain might offer you some musical relief.

I must admit that I don't know much about this band other than the demo they sent me. The first thing that struck me about this demo is the professional looking artwork. It is still printed and cut by hand, but because the band used high quality glossy printing paper it looks really good. The second thing that struck me was their stunning resemblance to old Anathema.

Now this always raises a debate between people who love the band and valiantly defend them as being original together with those who simply enjoy the same style of music over and over vs. the people who value originality and can't stand copy-cat bands (so called clone bands). I'll keep my distance from that cesspool however and simply note that Before The Rain sounds so much like early Anathema, especially the vocals, that it bothers me personally. This however says nothing about the quality of the musicianship, because from what these two songs offer, these guys do know how to play and compose music (although their compositions are not very original).

If you're into more of the same and love bands like Anathema, then this is for sure something to check out. But if you're looking for any kind of originality, then ignore this demo. I think that if they spend a little less time trying to copy Anathema, this band might actually become very interesting in the future, but for now this is not my cup of tea. I rather listen to the real thing.

[Note by reviewer: the demo got to me damaged and only played decently a few times, the other times the second track kept skipping. So if your getting this demo it might be a good idea to ask the band to double-check the copy they will burn for you.]
