If Sex Pistols played doom then they would sound just like these guys. The music is highly psychadelic and punk influenced on one side, but on the other ...

Venomous Maximus : MMIX - MMXI

Venomous Maximus describe their music as 'Occult Rock Metal', and they couldnít have been more accurate in their description.

Venomous Maximus come from Houston, Texas and this is a compilation of the bandís previous releases, the 2 track EP 'Give Up the Witch' (2010, tracks 5 and 6) and the 4 track EP 'The Mission' (2011, tracks 1-4). On their Bandcamp page they describe their music as Occult Rock Metal, and they couldnít have been more accurate in their description.

Over the playing time of less than 27 minutes, I was surprised to hear something I hadnít had the chance to listen to in a long period of time Ė a style referred to as Proto Doom on our site. Ever since the emergence of Reverend Bizarre, every new band playing Traditional Doom has been trying to come as close as they can to the slow, crushing sound of the Finns Ė some with success and some without. This is not the case with these guys. Their influences come from the early dawn of what we call Doom Metal, when it was still called Heavy Metal, and they range from Pentagram/Death Row to Witchfinder General and Angelwitch. The resulting songs are characterized by uptempo, energetic, adrenaline-fueled music that will please everybody who likes this style.

All six songs are great, albeit not too complex or well performed, but I give an extra point to ďWicked WaysĒ. I wish them luck and hope to hear more material soon; until then Iím going to spin the disk in my CD player again and again.

PS: I donít know why many sites list them as a Stoner band, but they have nothing in common with the sound of Kyuss, Fu Manchu or even the more metallic style of Monster Magnet who defined the scene and paved the way for the flood that followed them. Donít miss Venomous Maximus just because they are mislabeled.
