Sloth (US) : Fistula/Sloth Split

Fistula might have regretted doing this split with Sloth (what do I know?), but this 7" still holds some of the better stuff from both bands.

This split has one of the most awesome covers I've seen in all my years as reviewer. It's an image of a kid with a hand puppet, who seems to be making some sort of performance to, who I suspect to be, the comics guy from The Simpsons; the hand puppet looks like a retarded sloth. Furthermore, there is this even smaller kid who's thinking "say what?" and obviously can't believe the shit that's going on. Finally, when purveying the leftmost text-bubble you'll find the words "oh... by the way... fuck you." The cover thus makes a complete description of Sloth's music: The unbelievable shit by a retarded sloth who tells people to go fuck themselves. Anyways, I guess I have to be more specific if I'm to describe this 7" appropriately.

Amongst what Sloth produced for this split is a track that I consider to be one of their best works: The doom/sludge track 'War Procession.' It reminds me of what is perhaps their most classic track 'Anaconda' (from the split with Noothgrush.), a heavy yet bouncy track based on bass-lines. To describe the rest: 'Bands That Do Splits With Us Regret It' is a mere minute of silly noise; the two others are loud, fast noisecore tracks with vokills. Neither of those tree stand out as anything special.

Fistula take a their usual aggressive approach to doom/sludge, mixing Noothgrush, punkish hardcore and snarling vokills, adding a little stoner to make the riffage bouncier. Now, Fistula seems to be good at keeping up the level of quality and 'Shadow of the Serpent' is no exception. An excellent track within the genre which is somewhat memorable too. As a side note, the track doesn't actually end; the last ridge in the vinyl is made as to make the final guitar-whine drag on into eternity.

I don't consider this release to be of more than average importance to fans of either bands. Even so, it's not all that rare on eBay and it seldom fetches much of a price. I would still have bought it should I have found it at a price less than $10.
