Ereb Altor : By Honour

Ereb Altor prove that they have all the needed qualities to be christened Scald’s natural heirs.

Ereb Altor is the side project of two of the members of Isole, Daniel Bryntse (Ragnar) and Christer Olsson (Mats). The band exists since 1992 but they released their first album in 2008 and, despite the fact that Isole and Ereb Altor basically share the same members, the outfits are almost like day and night when it comes to music. Isole is a more traditional band in the vein of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus, whereas Ereb Altor build their Doom Metal sound on a Bathory Viking era basis.

The album starts with ‘Perennial’ a slow-paced, epic key-based instrumental intro that surely will attract many unsuspecting ambient fans, just to be brutally chased away as the second track ‘Awakening’ starts. This song, together with ‘Winter Wonderland’, are also to be found in their demo, and both are among the best Viking Metal moments I’ve heard and, beyond, they prove that our men have all the needed qualities to be christened as the legendary Scald’s natural heirs. The same goes for the majestic, slow and epic title track. With ‘Dark Nymph’, the band uses a more complex structure and borrow elements from more mainstream genres and the song might remind you of the slowest and less pompous moments of Doomsword. The album goes on with the best composition of the album, ‘Wizard’, which keeps the slow, heavy and epic feel of the previous ones, but it also shows the ability of their singer to relate and sing in the same odd and captivating way that Ian Andersson did in the old Jethro Tull’s albums. ’By Honour’ ends with ‘Ereb Altor’, an instrumental song that closes the album in the same melodic way as it was opened.

Those who like Epic Doom must have this album and they will be rewarded with the same dark, primitive and pagan sound Bathory, Scald, Gods Tower and Doomsword can deliver. I also recommend you to get their demo, which is still available for free in the download section of their old website, at http://hem.breadhand.net/criols.
