|Albatros is a Swedish band from Göteborg and this is their third demo. They claim to be influenced by bands as different as Black Sabbath and Pentagram on one side, to Fleetwood Mac and Captain Beyond on the other. It's a surprisingly fit description as they have definitely got the bouncy bass of Pentagram, the oldschool crunchy riffage of Black Sabbath, and the elements of 70's pop-rock psychadelia are clearly in the vain of the other two bands mentioned. The strongest Fleetwood Mac influence can be heard in the lyrics. As you might have noticed, there is even a gypsy themed track amongst them. Despite that all the influences come from the 60's and 70's, Albatros sound quite modern in it's nostalgic ways; an excellent love-stoner.|
Gracefulness is an unusual term in stoner rock, but it's very descriptive of the semi-etheral melodies of Albatros. They mix this with something quite of the opposite: bouncing rhythms and very headbanger friendly riffs. To me this paints an image of just how perfect the bandname fits their sound. While in flight the albatross is a bird of soaring, calm grace. When on the ground it's bulky and clumsy. The only major difference is that while Albatros produces upbeat melodies which is far more positive than vice-versa, the real life bird has somewhat of a reputation for being quite aggressive, even though that is hard to see when it lazily glides around over the ocean. As for the band, I'm glad they decided to keep their sound calm as I think any aggression at all would seriously conflict with it.
Albatros is a band for those who enjoy stoner with 70's psychedelia (although they do fall a tad outside the norm there) or generally happy stoner rock. In my opinion it's one of the best efforts within those boundaries and I thus feel this is worth recommending.
