|Poema Arcanus (or 'arcanvs' in ancient Latin letters) need very little introductions to the fans of doom. They released their first album in 1999 - having existed since 1992 - and they have since then never seized to surprise the doom fans with their talent.|
The album begins with the title track, a six minute instrumental that serves as an intro to the album and as a small taste of the album's ingredients. The music is dominated by heavy parts, intriguing melodies, and a very progressive aura. The band uses both clean and growling vocals, with the second giving to the songs a very bleak atmosphere as sometimes they tend to go from Death Metal growls to Black Metal shrieks. The clean vocals tend towards Gothic Metal, reminding me slightly of Moonspell or Type O Negative. Throughout the album the band jumps between melodious sections and crushing rhythmic ones, but without becoming predictable or monotonous.
In my opinion the highlight of the album is 'Alter'; this song has Spanish lyrics and this works great in the song. It also manages to capture the essence of the band in general as well as the album's nature and diversity. It certainly will become a classic in the bandís discography.
Overall the entire album is great with none of the songs lacking in quality or inspiration. The band has a unique way to mix their diverse influences and tendencies, and it is a great achievement to take Doom, Death, Black, Goth, Progressive, and even Thrash elements, and mix them together so harmoniously. Many have tried and most of them have gloriously failed, but Poema Arcanus managed to create an album with the potential to become a classic gem. Fans of Doom/Death will love it, but it has elements that will also appeal to fans of traditional and progressive sub-genres.
