Century Sleeper : Awaken

This is a project by James Allin (from Visionaire/Ikarian) and Ian Arkley (who's, among other bands, played guitar for Paramaecium and is currently vocalist and lead guitarist for My Silent Wake). Some may hold high hopes that Ian's presence means that Century Sleeper is a doom metal project. That is neither completely true or completely untrue, granted my own view of doom metal, of course. To me it is the rhythm which puts 'Awaken' on the other side of the doom border and little else. The majority of the tracks have a pushy mid-paced beat which I connect with bands like Theatre of Tragedy and Darkseed. Of course, this is a minor issue which I assume many won't consider at odds with the music's doomyness. And, more importantly, while it does energize the songs slightly, the feeling isn't that different from the My Silent Wake songs with the most gothic elements in them.

By now I hope you will have some idea as to what to expect from this album. If you don't then it might be that you haven't yet had the oppurtunity to check out My Silent Wake's music. If that is the case and you're a fan of the Peaceville Three tradition then I recommend that you experience them before turning to 'Awaken'. It is my anticipation that the doomsters who'd enjoy this release would also fancy My Silent Wake even more. If, however, you are more interested in a mournful Theatre of Tragedy and Darkseed (and indeed the Visionaire debut album, 'Mystical dominion'), then Century Sleeper is the band you'd want to try before the other.
