YOB : The Great Cessation

The survival of YOB is the collateral conclusion of a quite somber and annoying judicial case: Middian the band that had been set up by Mike Scheidt, the initiator of YOB, is no more. The name didn't suit some. [edit by admin.: Meaning, they got sued for having a too similar name to the defunct Midian.] YOB has thus been risen from the tomb for one more album.: 'The Great Cessation'. Maybe the one of hostilities. Anyway, YOB is back and it is a good thing.

YOB hasn't change though; the formula has been preserved. Who will complain? Not me. The flow is mesmerizing, it has a hypnotic effect, like a dark ocean billowing in slow undulations. The couple bass-guitar, sustained by a more distant drumming, rolls and thunders in a buzzing chaos; there is a fever, a tribal chaos, a prehistoric vibe if I dare say that is often enhanced by the deep growls of Scheidt who also resorts to some processed effects.

In this brown moonlight, halos are gleaming: some soft, almost oriental guitar lines happen to bring some fresh air in the blasphemous liturgy. But 'The Great Cessation' is also the one of coolness, YOB has turn its back from the psychedelic vibe of 'The Illusion of Motion'. The album is dark all along, it's a thick, dissonant and droning black mass that drains your soul. It's sick and kind of stubborn. Like a trance, like an ominous mantra. This is unique and I can only like it.
