Dawn Of Winter : The Peaceful Dead

Dawn Of Winter play a style of Epic Doom Metal not unlike Candlemass or Solitude Aeturnus complete with clean, vibrato laden vocals and heavy, dirge-like guitars. Don't look for originality in 'The peaceful Dead' as much as classic, classy Doom Metal holding high the traditions of its forefathers.

'The Music Of Despair', in both title and music, lay the foundation for a truly heavy Doom Metal experience. You know full well what kind of album to expect, and as each song goes by, those expectations are met and satisfied. 'A Lovelorn Traveller' is more of the same trudging, dark style set up in the opening track. Slow dirges, mournful, operatic vocals and dark, depair-laden melodies. 'Mourner' dials up the tempo just a touch without losing any of Dawn Of Winter's foreboding air while 'Holy Blood' brings things down once again to drag your senses through emotional blackness. Strong Candlemass ties are heard in 'The Oath Of The Witch', stronger even than other parts of the album. The opening, bleak clean tones of 'Throne Of Isolation' are as beautiful as they are sad. 'Burn Another Sinner' offers the fastest song on the album with a nice, head-banging tempo and riff.

'The peaceful Dead' delivers on all counts. The songs are strong, the sonics are clean and heavy, and the overall experience is a great Doom Metal ride. Fans of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus, as well as Isole, Revelation and the like, will no doubt find plenty to quench their thirst.
