VLE : Book of Illusions: Chapter I

Eclectic Dark Experimental Soundscapes. That is the description given by the author of this project. Musically, this release should be approached precariously, as all the tracks are mostly improvised. While this certainly creates a dreamy atmosphere, it also means the songs are somewhat inconsistent or simple at times.

'Kano' is a calm instrumental intro, giving you a floating feeling. The second song has a gothic metal feel to it, in terms of riffing. Nice slow-tempo metal, but nothing spectacular. 'Behold The Night' is one of the better songs on this mCD. The guitars on this song are quite uplifting and this song is the one that projects the best what VLE wants to evoke with the listener, a dreamy, calm atmosphere, while beholding the glory of nature. The short song 'Drift' is the most doomy song on this release, with a very depressing, slow riff.

All in all, the music is certainly not bad, and it succeeds well in creating a certain ambience. The only problem I have with it, is the direction VLE should be taking. Improvising songs can lead to great music, but I expect a little more experimentation from that than I've heard here. On the other hand, the songs are a bit too simple or monotonous to be suitable for a 'listening album'. I advise VLE to try and choose between improvisation or more complex song writing and focus on one direction. As it is now, the music, although promising, lacks a bit of direction.
