Un Cri Silencieux : Scarlet Room

While this band features the man behind the doom/black project Asofy there are no similarities between the two. However, the band does have several strong connections with early The 3rd and the Mortal, especially the long jazzy sections of atmospheric doom metal. [edit by author: It should be mentioned, however, that Un Cri Silencieux is not a doom band as such, but has several sections of this subgenre.] Even so, while both bands display a feeling of sadness, Un Cri Silencieux is actually quite warm and dreamy most of the time. While The 3rd and the Mortal have a few songs with Norwegian lyrics, these guys have 'Monocromi In Autunno'. This means "monochrome in autumn" in Italian and the lyrics on that track, and parts of others, are also in Italian.

As I already said there is this warm sadness that fills this album. It yields some rather beautiful images of autumn leaves. There is also a sense of romance. I don't know if that is due to the relaxed, down to earth voices of the vocalists Sara Moricobi and Matteo Donni, but at least their style gives the music an Italian sound. It amazes me that this music manages to remain only partially doom metal, while still retaining a doomy atmosphere at all times. And even then they remain romantic and soothing.

There is also a movie track present on the CDr. It is an abstract clip that seems to have no other meaning than to give more depth to the emotional aspects of the title track. There are some clips of two young ladies in summer dresses, a beach, a cornfield and a house. However many times I watch it, I can't seem to get anymore meaning out of it than that. While mentioning 'Scarlet Room', I should also mention that there is something about that track which has continued to annoy me. It's generally a short, OK track, but one of the elements in it sounds like a vacuumcleaner and that kind of ruins the mood on it. Fortunately the track lasts less than 3 minutes so there is still 20 minutes of really good stuff left.

This CDr is something that fans of atmospheric doom would certainly enjoy. On the other hand I'm pretty sure that this will also be of interest to those who like Enya. Having said that, I'm sure many would think that this can't be any good. Well, honestly, while I found it rather boring the first time I listened to it, it quickly grew on me and I'd actually recommend it. It's probably the most peaceful CDr in my entire collection.
