TARAKSY : Danse Macabre

The Russian band TARAKSY has with 'Danse Macabre' released a good demo. This could have been recorded in the glorious early ninties: this is clearly Death Metal oriented like Dusk or early Paradise Lost. The production's texture dates also from this era: raw and natural. This is up-tempo and heavy but also very melodic as Forest Stream or Galadriel can be.

The drums are blasting and thundering along with the greasy bass, laying the fat and dark soil upon which the guitar’s lines roll with a great sense of groove. The deep growls are well modulated giving the songs a vivid rhythm.

The keyboards are totally rooted in the Slavic metal tradition: very melodic but never kitsch, soft piano-like or more ethereal lines help to add to the complexity of the band’s music. That's a remarkable aspect of 'Danse Macabre': the somber, abrasive sides mix very smoothly with lighter, more delicate aspects. This is quite unconventional harsh, melodic Doom Death! Two words that don't often match (the band itself speaks of 'Twilight Metal'... the fear of being labelled can explain this little eccentricity! ) Also noteworthy are TARAKSY's composition skills. With three tracks, this demo is short but everything is delivered with a straight forward attitude that keeps you interested all along. This is a band to keep an eye on...if it still exists, that is.
