Colosseum : Chapter I: Delirium

In the Land of the 1000 Lakes, the air is thick and the darkness weighs heavily upon the shoulders of the miserable creatures struggling for relief. Sloth and depression are the roots of many creations in this dark side of the continent. And so is the case for the new Finnish doom band Colosseum. The members are definitely no rookies, as many of them have vast years of experience in the metal scene under the moniker Yearning. After five albums and many years of melodic and experimental metal in that shape, the guys couldnít resist their natural urge to oust their misery and darkness in some of the heaviest and bleakest funeral doom that ever cursed the ear of man.

After the disappointing last release of fellow Finnish doomsters Shape of Despair, this debut album of Colosseum is a great next step on the road of crushing and slowTM funeral doom metal. Massive walls of distortion, eerie guitar lines, layer upon layer of atmospheric keys and an ultra deep death grunt underneath all, creates a stunning experience that will sound extremely tasty to fans of Skepticism, PantheÔst or Shape of Despair.

Every track is carefully worked out, flowing through every imaginable mental region yet so drenched in darkness that hope of deliverance is far away at any time. Listening to this album is an audio experience of a dark journey, with seamless transitions from massive, crushing riffs over slow torturing backways to yet again tsunamis of freakish brain pulses. These beautiful pieces of dark art easily hit the ten minute mark without ever becoming monotonous or uninteresting.

This release can easily be counted as one of the better debut albums in doom, and is extremely promising for future masterpieces.
