|It is a cosmic elegy that Ea has composed.|
|The entity that is hiding under the identity of EA cultivates secrecy. Of its members, we know nothing. Its nationality is dubious. We are just allowed to learn that the lyrics and artistic/spiritual/aesthetic concept that they convey are the expression of the obscure legacy of ancient long-forgotten civilizations.|
Surprisingly, magically, this primitive substrate is distinctly percieved in Eaís dark and delicate Funeral Doom.
The effects on display are quite conventional: titanic riffs, tons of reverberation that stretches the notes and make them die slowly dissolving them in an indistinct melodic flow, cavernous growls and liturgical, dramatic keyboards. The album is crushingly heavy like a charge of stone mammoths, filled with an eager trepidation but (and here it becomes really interesting) itís also very subtlely organized, full of dark and strange whisperings like the murmur of a distant time, the echoes of the universal memory.
Stellar leads, crepuscular piano, rumbling drums...it is a cosmic elegy that writes Ea, its Funeral Doom is the result of a clever songwriting. It is made of varied melodic patterns which articulate smoothly. It also has strikingly relevant ambient parts that work like gates to a mysterious past. They are muffled roars, small drops of water disturbing the rest of a dead underground lake. Then, the tranquil sounds of spectral mists that you imagine running on the surface of a river in South America, in the heart of the impenetrable primordial jungle.
Ea transcribes these confused mystical wanderings with extraordinarily subtle composition skills. The music has an almost friendly touch; a passage on the piano opens for simple arpeggios on an acoustic guitar, then the thunder breaks and discharges masses of distortion, the voice grunts unintelligible imprecations while solemn choirs whisper obscure sermons. These somber and eerie chants are developed with an outstanding sense of grandeur and serenity. Itís like an intimate sanctuary.
Ea offers with íIIí a dynamic form of Funeral Doom, full of details that avoid the trap of inertia in which (sometimes on purpose, sometimes by lack of talent) many similar projects quite systematically fall.
Two long tracks, two great scenes, one magic album.
